"The algorithm hates me."

We hear it every day. Reach is down. Engagement is down. The algorithm changed again. Instagram/TikTok/LinkedIn is dead.

But here's the uncomfortable truth: most of the time, the algorithm isn't the problem.

Your content is.

I know that stings. But blaming the algorithm is just copium that prevents you from fixing what's actually broken.

Let's do a brutally honest content audit.

Part 1: The Hook Audit

Your hook is the first 1-3 seconds of video or the first line of your caption. This is where 80% of content fails.

Signs Your Hooks Are Weak:

  • You start with context instead of intrigue
  • Your first line could apply to any brand
  • You bury the interesting part
  • You start with "So..." or "Okay so..."
  • Your video starts before you're ready
  • You use the same hook format every time

The Fix:

Bad hook: "So today I wanted to share some tips about marketing..."

Good hook: "This marketing mistake is costing you $10k/month."

Bad hook: "Hey everyone! Happy Monday!"

Good hook: "Monday mood: realizing your competitor stole your strategy"

Rule: If your hook works for anyone, it works for no one.

Part 2: The Value Audit

"Valuable content" is the most overused advice in marketing. But most content isn't actually valuable — it's just... content.

Signs Your Content Lacks Real Value:

  • People consume but don't save or share
  • Comments are just emojis or "nice!"
  • You're saying what everyone else says
  • Your "tips" are obvious
  • People aren't tagging friends
  • You can't answer "why would someone screenshot this?"

The Fix:

Value = Specific + Actionable + Novel

  • Specific: "Post at 9am" beats "Post consistently"
  • Actionable: "Here's the exact template" beats "You should use templates"
  • Novel: Your unique take, data, or experience beats recycled advice

If you can Google your tip and find it in the first 3 results, it's not novel.

Part 3: The Format Audit

The same message in different formats gets wildly different results.

Signs You're Using the Wrong Formats:

  • You post what's easy to make, not what performs
  • You're ignoring video because it's hard
  • All your content looks the same
  • You haven't tested new formats in months
  • You're using formats that worked in 2022

The Fix:

Audit your last 30 posts:

  • What format got highest reach?
  • What format got highest engagement?
  • What format got highest saves/shares?

Double down on what's working. Kill what isn't. Test one new format per month.

Current format hierarchy (2026):

  1. Short-form video (Reels, TikTok, Shorts)
  2. Carousels
  3. Text-based (Twitter/Threads, LinkedIn text)
  4. Single image (hardest to win with now)

Part 4: The Consistency Audit

Algorithms reward consistency. Not just posting frequency — consistent identity.

Signs You're Confusingly Inconsistent:

  • Your profile looks different from your content
  • People can't describe what you're "about"
  • You post about too many different topics
  • Your visual style changes constantly
  • You sound different post to post
  • You go viral for something off-brand and chase it

The Fix:

The 3x3 Rule:

  • 3 content pillars max (topics you cover)
  • 3 content formats max (how you deliver)
  • 3 visual styles max (how it looks)

More than that = brand confusion = algorithm doesn't know who to show you to.

Part 5: The Engagement Audit

Algorithms measure signals. If your content doesn't generate signals, it won't get distributed.

Signs Your Engagement Strategy is Broken:

  • You post and ghost
  • You don't reply to comments (or reply late)
  • Your captions don't invite response
  • You never ask questions
  • You don't engage with others in your niche
  • All engagement is shallow (emoji replies)

The Fix:

  • Reply to every comment in the first hour
  • End captions with genuine questions
  • Spend 15 minutes engaging before and after posting
  • Have actual conversations, not "thanks!"
  • Create content that requires response (polls, hot takes, this-or-that)

Part 6: The Posting Time Audit

This matters less than people think, but it still matters.

Signs Your Timing is Off:

  • You post when it's convenient for you, not your audience
  • You post at the same time every day regardless of data
  • You've never checked your analytics for best times
  • You post on weekends if your audience is B2B (or weekdays if B2C heavy)

The Fix:

  • Check your analytics for when your audience is actually online
  • Test different times for 2 weeks each
  • General rules: B2B = weekday mornings, B2C = evenings and weekends
  • Consistency of timing > perfect timing

The Honest Assessment

Score yourself on each section (1-10):

  • Hooks: __/10
  • Value: __/10
  • Format: __/10
  • Consistency: __/10
  • Engagement: __/10
  • Timing: __/10

Total: __/60

  • 50-60: Algorithm isn't your problem. Keep testing.
  • 35-50: You have weak spots. Fix the lowest scores first.
  • Below 35: Stop blaming the algorithm. Fix your fundamentals.

The Bottom Line

The algorithm is just math. It shows content that keeps people on the platform to more people.

If your content isn't getting distributed, it's because the math isn't mathing.

Not because some robot has a vendetta against you.

Fix the fundamentals. The algorithm will follow.
